Works of Art

Vegan Cat
Prisma ColorPencil

Fall 2020

I worked on Vegan Cat in the medium of Prisma color. In this piece, the flower-headed cat reaches for the moon. Although, the cat is tethered to the ground with flowers. It shows that the only thing stopping you from greatness is yourself.
In this project of surrealism, I played with perspective. I used the Prisma to try and give it a realistic look. I started off with a few basic ideas before I began the final piece. I should’ve sketched it out with the colors I was going to use, but that didn’t happen. Next, I started with the lighter colors, getting darker as I headed along.
The elements I used were value, which is how light or dark a color is, and intensity; how vivid, bright, or rich a color is. I used value for my shadows and highlights. Then, I used intensity to make them pop. The principles I used were proportion, which is the relationship between objects in a work of art, and balance; the visual distribution of weight through color, texture, and space. I used proportion to help with the realistic aspect and balance to make things seem stable.

Cube Cat
Watercolor

Spring 2020

I created Cube cat using the medium of watercolor. I chose this picture specifically so that I could draw my cat along with myself. Purple is one of my favorite colors, so I used it for my favorite buddy.

The project was to draw a self-portrait in the style of cubism. I started with a rough sketch, and then filled out the rest with shapes that I thought would fit best for each section Afterwards, I chose what colors I wanted and erased lines before filling in shape. To finish, I outlined the picture to make it look cleaner.

The elements I used were line, a mark that is longer than it is wide, and shape, when lines intersect to enclose a space, creating shapes that are two-dimensional. I used line for the basic sketch and then used shape to make it come together. The principles I used were repetition, which helps unify a work of art by repeating lines, shapes, and colors, and balance, the visual distribution of weight through color, texture, and space. Repetition helped give the piece some variety and balanced makes it look more visually pleasing.

Fact: Watercolor paint is a mix of pigment and gum Arabic, a natural “Glue” made from the sap of the acacia tree.

French Shot
Charcoal, 2019

I created French Shot in the medium of charcoal. I thought it'd be interesting to make almost a creature out of my French objects. I attempted to recreate a pea shooter. It was fun to try and find objects that match my objective.
All the objects in my picture are French, colored in charcoal. I gathered my resources and began to sketch a rough outline. Next, I began filling in with my lightest pencil, progressing to the darkest. I tried to find my shadows, and then used my white pencil to highlight the lights. Lastly, I used my blending tool to pull it together.
The elements I used were line, which is a line that's longer than it is wide, and value. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color, which helped me form my tints and shades. Line gave me shapes to work with. Some principles I used were contrast, which can help create a focal point in a work, and proportion. Proportion is defined as the relationship between objects of art, which helped me create a feel of realism. Contrast helped me emphasize the main sketch in my piece.

Bertrum

Oil Paint, 2020

This piece is called Bertrum, he was made using oil paints. This year, I am following a frog theme. I thought this toad wearing a wizard hat was cute. Although I could never recreate such beauty, I tried anyway.

Following my frog theme, I chose to use oil paints as my first medium with the size required. The first step was to get down a basic sketch, an outline per se. I’m not a fan of oil paints and I can’t work them very well, so next I tried my best to capture the tints and shades. There’s a fancy oil you use to make it go on the canvas a little smoother, so I used that. Lastly, I finished up with his gorgeous eyes. One of the elements I used was line, which is longer than it is wide. I used it for my outline of the frog. Emphasis, which catches the viewer’s attention, helped make my frog the focal point.

Inigo Montoya

Charcoal, 2020

I named this piece Inigo Montoya, I made him in the medium of pencils. This was an idea I got from my English teacher, Mr. Salander, who wanted a frog in shining armor. I had some inspiration from the Princess Bride, which is where I got the idea for the sword and the stache.

I followed my frog theme and used the required paper along with the materials. I had gathered my references and began to sketch. I wanted to block in all my shading before I used any highlights. I also lost my white pencil for a bit. To make my project seem more alive, I used the principle of movement, which is the result of using the elements of art in a way that they move viewer's eye around the image. The element I used is value, how light or dark something is, to make the project a little more in depth.

Catharsis

Digital Art, Winter 2021

This piece is titled Catharsis, and was created using the medium of digital art. Through the past few years, the world had gone through many changes. Finding a way to release all the fear, doubt, and the stress was relatively hard to find. The artwork helped guide me through these feelings when I couldn't find a way with words. In this, Catharsis feels like a fitting name for such a piece.

Finding what colors I was going to use had to be my favorite part. Once I had finally settled on a few, I sketched out the rough draft. I outlined each section with a darker color than what it was originally going to be, since just a black outline felt boring. Lastly, I colored the larger sections with a base color, and finished off with the highlights and shadows.

Saudade

Digital, Fall 2021

The name of this artwork is Saudade, created in digital. A part of this artwork is a reflection, on how sometimes it’s hard to recognize who you see staring back at you. Late at night, you’re enveloped with some awe of learning who you are all over again. You grow so much as a person; it can be hard to keep up with. Whether or not you’re proud of what you see, it will always be you.

I began with a light sketch to get a good idea of what I would like to do, and then I chose my color palette. Once I had that established, I laid down my flat colors. I cleaned it up using line art, making sure to use varying weights. To finish it off, I added sketchy shadows to add some variety. One of the elements in this piece is texture, the way something feels in two-dimensional art. The principle is Emphasis, a part of a design that catches the viewer’s eye.
